So the thing I'm most excited about currently- at least game-wise- is Grayshot. This is because it's none other than a motherfucking Cloverfield game, or at least "inspired" by it.
(Originally, it was going to be an actual Cloverfield game, but then the actual company who owns Cloverfield called the guy and told him they were going to make an official game. Apparently, they told him gently, and without threat of lawyers, so props to Paramount Pictures, J.J. Adams, Matt Reeves, and all the others who own the Cloverfield franchise for having the decency to not be dicks to some guy who apparently really appreciated the movie.)
Surprisingly, the decision to move from an actual Cloverfield game to one "inspired" by it has gotten me more excited, believe it or not. I don't want to play a Cloverfield retread, exciting as that would be; I'd rather play a whole new game, that shows a new take on the entirety of the action.
That was kind of the point of Cloverfield, really, to show a situation we all know- giant monster taking on the Big Apple- in a whole new way. We've seen the monster busting cities up from an omniscient viewpoint before, from far-away, very safe distances out of reach of claw, fire breath, or tail; but never have we seen the devastation up-close and personal, in the way that normal people really would experience it. The Cloverfield movie is what would really happen to the average person if a giant monster attacked New York- as oxymoronic and senseless as it may be to put "really happen" and "giant monster" in the same sentence.
Grayshot seems to be running off much the same formula and much the same mystique as Cloverfield; it's got an excellent viral campaign going already, with the Lawrence Tibbins site and New Jersey 5 News being the best two examples. The official website itself, grayshotgame.com, is actually the biggest part of the campaign, believe it or not; here's a minor spoiler. Search right above the ticking clock to find a link called "Findings". That will be one of the most interesting little picture galleries you'll explore in a long time, believe me.
(Additional spoiler: On the last pic, wait a minute or two with the volume turned up.)
A new monster brings new ideas, fresh blood to brighten up the whole game, a viral campaign that captures the mystery and sense of foreboding that was key to Cloverfield's success... yeah, I'm feeling good about Grayshot.
The best part?
It's going to be a free downloadable when it's done.
What else could you ask for?
Your Master,
-Bloody King of the World
